Well, it seems that Microsoft is being challenged by Facebook on a certain level. Facebook just dumped Microsoft’s Bing as its go-to search engine. Facebook will focus on its own search engine.

This does not seem like such a surprise seeing how so many are obsessed with Facebook. So, why not come up with its own search engine?

Don’t feel bad for Microsoft though, they still own a 1% stake in Facebook. It may not seem like a lot but consider Facebook’s net worth of $211 billion!

Yes, Microsoft should not be crying too much.

Mark Zuckerberg seems to be overtaking Bill Gates as the face of modern tech. Not bad for a couple of Harvard drop outs.

There are many reasons to not like social media. Sure, it has brought us all closer together and allows us to connect with others that we may never have met before. Social media allows us to stay on top of events in the world in general.

Yet, there are things that social media is not good for chief amongst this is just plain too much information. People seem to give up too much of themselves online. It has gotten to the point where anything that you say or do online can be used against you.

Recently, I was speaking with a career counselor from my alma mater and the first thing that he asked me was:

“Do you have a LinkedIn account?”

I answered in the affirmative and then a moment later he went online and found my account. He said my profile looked pretty good, by the way. Anyhow, this is just another example of how others can look you up online at any time. So, those of you posting random attacks, posting lewd pictures, and dirty jokes beware.

Someone is watching you.

I harken back to the days before computers became such an integral part of our lives. My friends and I would go outside to play baseball or basketball.

Outside. What a concept?

Today, we are all mired behind our computers checking out Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, or any other social media platform that consumes us.

Here’s an idea: walk away from your computer!

Leave it for a little while anyway. Go outside. Reacquaint yourself with the sunshine and trees. They are still there and would probably enjoy your company.

Social media does have its place and is a great tool when it is used properly. But we should not let it dominate our lives. There is a whole world out there to see with our own eyes and not filtered through a computer screen.

So, who is ready for a beach trip?

It is amazing how much time people now waste on social media. Yes, sure we all want to keep up with family, friends, and the events of the world. But the question is at what cost?

We become distracted by what is going on in other peoples lives and forget about our own. There are those that follow the latest Tweets about their favorite celebrities but do not pay attention to their own lives.

Social media causes distraction and keeps folks from paying attention to what they are doing at that moment.

People are glued their computers or smart phones trying to keep up with everything that is going on in the world. Yet, why do they not go out and speak to another person fae-to-face?

I can recall a time when computers did not dominate the landscape never mind Facebook or Twitter. It was a simpler time compared to now. A time when people would actually go out and meet each other of pick up the telephone for a live conversation.

There was no texting or tweeting.

This causes a vacuum where people spend so much time on their devices and not with others. It is as if computers/smart phones have become the new drug of choice.
