Russell Simmons

The hype of the world messes with us all at some point. We are constantly bombarded with images of death, violence, and all sorts of misery. Not all the news of the world is bad but the media focuses on the bad most of all. All of this can be a bummer.

Yet, in order for us to create a better world we need to better ourselves first. It has been said that change starts from within. This is what Russell Simmons seems to be addressing here. We need to not allow ourselves to be poisoned by the negativity in this world. Life can get us down but we need to lift ourselves up and this starts with what is between our ears.

It is finding peace within ourselves and once we can achieve this then we can be a positive impact on the world.

So, to quote one of Mr. Simmons’ former Def Jam artists, Public Enemy:

“Don’t Believe the Hype!”

Thoreau is the man…

Honestly, I did not get much into Thoreau during my school years. To be quite honest, I never had an English class in school they talked much about him. All that I knew of the man was that he lived at Walden Pond for a time and wrote a book about his experiences.

Well, I have seen more of his insights here and there and must admit they are very enlightening. Here is one that sticks out for me the most:

“If one advances confidently in the direction of their dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined , he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours.”

Pretty cool stuff. How many of us have forgotten how to dream? How has life gotten in the way of things? Why did we forget how to dream?

These are important questions especially when one is trying to find meaning in their life. Too many times, we let things happen to us and not make things happen.

This is the point Thoreau was trying to get at. If we follow our dreams, we will then get a feeling of accomplishment. We feel more like who we are at our core or soul. It is important that we remember who we are.

We should live out our dreams and not live out the dreams of others. Because if we forget about our own dreams then we are destined to live out someone else’s dream. This causes much unhappiness and resentment. We must be responsible for our own actions and not be afraid to take chances or risks to live out our dreams.

For as Thoreau points out that if we follow our dreams then we will have truly lived.

One can not tell what the future may hold, especially in this hyper speed linked in world that we all live in. Life can change in an instant. You can be making plans to do something but then a new opportunity or challenge will rear its head.

The big question is “how will you handle it?”

Many people do not like change. The chief reason for this is that it takes one out of their comfort zone. They are content with what they have and that is that.

Well, what if a new challenge comes along? Do you dread it? How will it change your life?

“This will ruin everything!” one may think.

So, should one just lay back and let things happen?

One can look at this as an opportunity to improve their lives. Can this situation be turned around for the better? This, of course, depends on how one looks at the situation. The best thing to do is to turn a negative into a positive. One can not know whether this challenge may lead into something wonderful to completely change their lives.

It all comes down to one’s thinking. Will it be addressed in the positive or the negative? Well, it has been said that a positive thought is more powerful than a negative one. And we all know what negativity results in.

It is not easy to always be positive but the results are much better this way. So, let us face life with a smile and open heart because the results will be much better. Having this attitude will allow one to face any change that may come.

Life is like baseball

All winter long I have been looking forward to the baseball season. Baseball is the sport that I enjoy the most. It is America’s past time. No other game imitates life like baseball does. The game has its ups and downs, streaks and slumps, grand slams and occasional triple plays (not very often but it does). Games can be short or long just like life can seem to be at times.

We have all had good and bad times in our lives. We have had streaks of good luck and times when we wonder if anything will ever go right (slumps).

The most important thing is how we deal with these situations. Do you hang your head in defeat when you do not achieve your goals? Or do you get up dust yourself off and step back into the batter’s box of life to take another swing.

Like anything else the easiest thing to do is nothing like taking a pitch. Or work hard and take a swing hoping to drive one out of the park.

This is how to play the game of life and succeed. Get up there and take your swings.

Batter up!!!
